OUR TRIP TO DRESDEN

At the end of 2002 we began our search for an appropriate male for our two girls. We found one from Andokaja's, also located in Barcelona , but they had just neutered him. We couldn't find any more. Weren't there any other Siberian males in Spain, except for those from VESHNY SON? If there were, we couldn't find them so we had to do something.

In June 2003 there was an International Show in Dresden, Germany including a Siberian Specialty. We contacted the organization committee. We weren't going as visitors; we wanted to buy a good stud.

After a somewhat complicated trip, we arrived in Dresden on Saturday night quite tired. Next morning we went to the sports centre where the show was being held. Daniel, who had just turned nine, immediately spotted the cages housing the Siberian cats. He got there much more I did and had already introduced himself as a Spanish breeder of Siberians to Gabi Heinicke, owner of the cattery VOM PARTHENSTRAND in Leipzig, and had mentioned that he wanted to buy a four-month-old male kitten, called Bonifaz, which he had liked very much.

Well, Gabi, I guess you thought it was a bit hasty! But Daniel has a good eye for cats and knows what he wants. During the whole day he hardly once separated himself from “his cat”. At the end of the day Bonifaz won the male kitten category and Daniel came away with his cat and trophy.

Bonifaz finished his show career in November 2005 as International Champion. He behaves well but hates cat shows, refuses to cooperate and seems to shrink two sizes. The judges like his mountain cat gaze. He's medium size but will probably weigh 10 kilos by the time he's five. His coat quality is very good with an almost perfect distribution of white. He's calm and cuddly, an excellent father and uncle, and, moreover, he carries the dilute gene.

Since we hadn't found any Siberians in Spain , and considering the excellent offer of young cats in this show, we decided to choose a second male, which wasn't easy. They were all lovely but we were looking for a good stud. I want to take advantage of the moment to thank Dr. Kerstin Gerlach from SANNOSCHKA cattery for her great help. She recommended ALEX VOM SCHNEESTERN XAMARA.

This is Alex:

Alex has finished his show career and is International Champion. Everyone says he could go further. But since we brought him from Dresden to Madrid, travelling with him every time has become a struggle. Once when he was four months old we had to bathe him in the Ladies´ room of the Frankfurt airport where he almost escaped from us and then practically shattered his carrier case, falling asleep only several hours later from sheer exhaustion. His travelling days are definetively over.

At home his untiringly affectionate and talks away to us when we get home. He's the only one who can sleep on my bed, a privilege that the females enjoy only when they're about to give birth.

So, with two good males to form the base of our recent cattery, we had completed our mission.

But we saw something else that was just irresistible: a blue tortoise female also from the Leipzig VOM PARTHENSTRAND cattery. She was called Alyshia and had the thickest tail I had ever seen on a domestic cat. We had no idea how we were going to get her back home.

On Monday, a hot June day, dead tired but excited, we set off with our precious acquisitions on our return trip to Madrid .

We must thank the Lufthansa employees in Dresden and Frankfurt for their generosity and good will. According to the computer, it's not permitted to travel with three cats in two carrier cases. We had real problems.

Under the unbelieving eye of the other travellers (Alex was recently bathed, a bit humid, still complaining, and smelling rather strange) we were treated like real VIPs. They tried everything but the computer system would not be fooled. Finally we had to check in by hand with the captain's consent. Thanks, without your determination, we would have been stranded.
