THE ORIGIN OF THE SIBERIAN CAT
In the south of Europe, if we heard the word “Siberia” in connection with some animal, the first thing to come to mind would be the Siberian Husky, which reached Europe through Alaska, or the legendary Siberian tiger. How is it that we know practically nothing of the spectacular Siberian cat?

These experts claim it has a wild, independent nature. This could be the genetic basis of the breed.

Anyone who lives day to day with Siberian cats knows that this can't be the whole truth. The Siberian cat has a sweet, balanced nature, is talkative, playful and, above all, faithful like the best of our domestic cats. Our domestic cats descend from the docile Egyptian cat….

The Moslems crossed the Caucasian mountains and reached Kasachstan, next to Siberia.

From there the Siberian cat could extend all along the north of the Asian continent as a domestic cat, beginning its evolution as an autochthonous breed in one of the coldest regions of our planet.

The reason may be the enormous distance or a lack of knowledge of Russia, its country of origin. Another reason could be the popularity of other breeds and their excellent marketing strategies.

We're absolutely convinced that this void should be filled. We've dedicated a great deal of time and enthusiasm to tracking down the Siberian cat.

You are going to discover one of the most marvellous breeds in the world …. And you are going to see how it finally reached us despite many obstacles.

How far back does the Siberian cat date? It has been calculated that the breed has lived there for about 1000 years. How did it arrive?

There are several hypotheses. Some say that it is a cross between the feral cats of that area, which have never been domesticated, and the domestic cats that were taken there by the Russian immigrants.

Could the Egyptian cat have reached the most northeastern part of Asia from the Nile? In the Middle Ages cats were feared in Europe. They were even persecuted as if they had the devil within.

From the VIII century just the opposite occurred on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean that was conquered by the followers of Mohammed who appreciated and respected cats.

They were aware that these docile hunters kept rats away and with them, the feared plague. Due to their military and commercial activities, they were undoubtedly decisive in the propagation of the Egyptian cat.

Turkish and Persian breeds are known to be among the most ancient in the world. In Asia Minor summers are very hot and winters, very cold. Thanks to its robustness, the cat of Egyptian origin was able to adapt to crude climatic changes, substituting its short coat for the pretty long or semi-long one, and acquiring a heavier build.
